Spread out along the hilly north shore of Lake Superior, Duluth lies amid some of the most scenic country in Minnesota. This northern Minnesota city is located at the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, halfway between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Canadian border. Spend a few days in Duluth, and discover why over 3.5 million tourists visit there each year.

Duluth
is known in Minnesota as

a gateway to the wilderness. The Superior Hiking Trail, the Munger Trail and Spirit Mountain beckon adventurers, while birdwatchers travel to Hawk Ridge to watch raptors and other species migrate. The Great Lakes Aquarium offers views of freshwater fish and wildlife.

One of the best times to visit is autumn, when leaves on the hardwoods turn brilliant colors. Along the St. Louis River, hikers and bicyclists greet spring and summer as they enjoy Western Waterfront Trail, a 5-mile path with picnic areas and access sites for boats. Winter is welcomed by skiers and snowmobilers eager to glide along the 45 miles of snowmobile trails, and over 30 miles of cross-country ski trails,

Duluth is a popular base for chartered fishing expeditions on Lake Superior, where anglers can hook steelhead, Chinook, Coho,Atlantic salmon, and trout. Sightseeing cruises are another way to get onto the water. They run from June-September and usually last about two hours.

Canal Park is the centerpiece of the city's waterfront. The Canal Park Marine Museum includes theWilliam A. Irvin, the 610-foot flagship of the old U.S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet. Canal Park is where you can see the Aerial Lift Bridge. It lifts straight up to allow ships to pass through the Duluth Ship Channel. South of the bridge is the Great Lakes Aquarium, an unusual freshwater aquarium that is home to 70 species of fish found in the Great Lakes. Interactive exhibits at the the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center explain the lakes' ecology. From the park, there is the opportunity to stroll along the Lakewalk, a waterfront boardwalk.

A walk around Depot Square, reveals a compact re-creation of old Duluth. The model buildings include: a meat market, a barbershop, a bank and other establishments, all in three-quarter scale, and a trolley running through the square. Near Depot Square are the Lake Superior Museum of Transportation (railway buffs will enjoy the collection of antique trains), the Duluth Art Institute, and the Chisholm Museum, which documents the experiences of immigrants to the area. The Fond-du-Luth Gaming Casino is also downtown.

There are so many family oriented attractions in Duluth. Park Point, a 6-mile sandbar at the tip of Minnesota Point, is the site of a beach, picnic facilities, playgrounds, and ball fields. Just outside Duluth is Superior National Forest.

Theater, music and ballet are among the cultural events presented in the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The Port Town Trolley offers tours of the city and harbor front from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.

Even during the coldest times, getting around town is easy and pleasant as the result of an extensive, climate-controlled skywalk which connects all of the major downtown facilities.

The historic Glensheen Estate is a must-see while visiting. Glensheen features a 39-room Jacobean style mansion complete with custom designed, original furnishings. The beautifully manicured grounds include formal gardens, a carriage house with carriage collection, gardener's cottage, clay tennis courts, and more. Completed in 1908, Glensheen is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A side trip for the whole family is the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad. You can enjoy an historic 90-minute journey along the scenic St. Louis River and view wildlife in its natural environment amid the majestic beauty of the river and surrounding area. Using vintage equipment as well as an open "Safari Car" on its excursions, the LS&M traces its roots back to 1863 and was the first railroad linking Duluth with the Twin Cities.

Winter is chilly for most people with temperatures often below 0 and plenty of snow. It's a great time to watch the Sled Dog Marathon, held in February and to attend Winterfest. Spring begins to appear in April with temperatures rising each day. You can expect a little late snow in April, but most days are crisp and pleasant. This is the time of the Homegrown Music Festival, an annual, outdoor spring event.

In the summer, Lake Superior is dotted with boats, and many festivals occur. The Lake Superior Swim and Beach Run takes place in June., followed by the Duluth International Regatta, the Bayfront Blues Festival, and the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival.

Downtown Duluth hosts an annual three day Country Music Festival on the July 4 holiday weekend for visitors who want to experience a departure from the traditional one-day parade and fireworks.

Fall, tends to begin early, bringing with it the colors of the season. A favorite fall pastime is Hawk watching, held at the Nature Reserve each year as well as Quilting on the Waterfront and Adventure Duluth.

Adventure Duluth: 6 Extreme Events For the avid athlete

combination of events:

1. Lake Superior Swim and Beach Run

Swim 1 mile along the Park Point beach in Lake Superior. All swimmers will walk one mile south of 13th street (Franklin Lot on the lakeside) and then race back to the Franklin Lot. Long sleeve wet suits and neoprene head beanies are required. No hand wear will be allowed.

2. Sea Kayak

Paddle 9 miles from the Franklin Lot on the lakeside of Park Point under the Aerial Lift Bridge and up the St. Louis River to Indian Point Camp Ground. Choose the standard single sea kayak or the unlimited racing kayak division. A Coast Guard approved PFD is required. Rental kayaks are available on a first come, first served basis.

3. Mountain Bike

This 18-mile journey begins at Indian Point Campground and follows the shoreline of the St. Louis River on the Western Waterfront Trail. It connects with the Munger Trail before heading up into the Spirit Mountain Trail System. Racers will enjoy spectacular views of the river basin on a combination of old railroad grade, dirt roads, and single track trails. The journey circles back to the Munger Trail and ends at the Riverside Community Center. A bike helmet is required.

I4. In-line Skate

In-Line skate 12.25 miles on the Munger Trail to the UMD Outpost in Thompson. The trail is a seven-foot wide asphalt surface that will be shared with the public on race day. A bike helmet is required.

5. Whitewater Canoe

Paddle across the Thomson Reservoir on the St. Louis River and then portage up a one way trail to the base of "Electric Ledge". Paddle across a section of moving water to meet the fur trader and collect your goods. Continue paddling through the Class II-III rapids or choose a longer portage route in the woods to avoid the whitewater. A safety team will be located in the whitewater section to help you if you have any problems. This is a four-mile round trip journey. Choose the standard open canoe or unlimited racing open canoe division. A Coast Guard approved PFD and bike or whitewater helmet is required. Rental canoes are available on a first come, first served basis.

6. Trail Run

The last journey is a 10 mile marked point to point run following the established Jay Cooke State Park hiking trails. All runners must stay on the marked race trail. The exit point from the Jay Cooke State Park is the Spruce Trail, which takes you to Hwy 23. You will run approximately one mile on shoulder of Hwy 23 to the Chamber's Grove finish line in Fond du Lac.

The City of Duluth welcomes the Northwoods League to the area with the introduction of the Huskies. The team features baseball stars of tomorrow. Baseball has been a Duluth staple since 1903. Wade Stadium has been a longtime landmark for many future major leaguers and Hall of Fame inductees. Northwoods baseball is entertainment focused for family fun at an affordable price. Here's your chance to explore the wet, wild and wonderful world of whitewater rafting! Superior Whitewater Rafting is located on the St. Louis River in Carlton, just 15 miles south of Duluth. On-water trip time is two to three hours. Everything is supplied - equipment, shuttle service and the friendliest, most experienced guides you'll find on any river trip.

Four to six persons share a raft (you'll be paired up with others to fill a raft if necessary). No experience required. Trips are ideal for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. Go early in the season for high-water adventures or late in the season for still exciting, but less challenging, flows. Rafters must be in good health and a minimum age of 12 years.

The new Black Bear Golf Course, located adjacent to the Black Bear Casino and Hotel Golf Resort on interstate I35 and Highway 210 in Carlton, Minnesota. This par 72, 18 Hole Championship Golf Course, which measures 6,470 yards, was carved out of a Northern Minnesota forest and wetlands. Designed with ten lakes, natural streams and rock outcroppings, the course provides natural beauty as well as challenges for all golfers. Large, multi-tiered fine bent grass greens provide distinctive challenges. The signature Hole #7 features a 25-foot Bear Claw sand bunker strategically placed for premium shot makers to go for the green.

Local Seasons:

Duluth is a city that embraces its weather. Whether it's a sports activity, shopping, attending a festival, Hawk watching, or just enjoying a warm fire, this city has a season for it. Winter is chilly for most people with temperatures often below 0 F and plenty of snow. It's a great time to watch the Sled Dog Marathon, held in February. Spring begins to appear in April with temperatures rising each day. You can expect a little late snow in April but each day is crisp and exciting. It's the perfect time to spend a day at the Homegrown Music Festival, an annual, outdoor spring event. Summer is the time people truly enjoy and is the most popular. Lake Superior is dotted with boats, festivals are occurring, and people can be seen everywhere. The Lake Superior Swim and Beach Run takes place in June and is a great event for participating or watching. Fall, which tends to begin early, brings with it the colors of the season. A favorite fall pastime is Hawk watching, held at the Nature Reserve each year. It's the perfect time for a brisk walk and a warm drink.
