Terminals Designed by Eero Saarinen and officially opened in 1962 the main terminal was only actually completed in 1996, after airport authorities had decided to expand the building according to the architect's original plans. The main terminal serves many airlines and a large number of destinations. It has a variety of restaurants, bars, newsstands and shops. Business services, currency exchange services and ATMs (cash machines) are also available. Washington Dulles International Airport operates an unusual system for getting passengers to and from their planes. The main terminal handles functions such as check in and baggage claim. To get to and from airplanes passengers use planemates (essentially, large buses), mobile lounges (another type of large bus), and concourse buildings that stand independently in midfield. These concourses do provide some types of passenger services, such as cafes, restaurants etc. Main Terminal The main terminal serves many different airlines. Washington Dulles International Airport provides facilities for hourly, daily, and economy parking. In all three sections there are spaces reserved for individuals with disabilities. Automatic payment machines may be used to help speed exit from parking facilities. Drivers should obtain a ticket on entry to the car parks, take the ticket with them into the terminal, use an automatic machine to pay the ticket on exit from the terminal, and then insert the franked ticket into the gate machine to obtain exit from the parking facilities.
The hourly parking lot is located right in front of the main terminal. Convenient walkways link the lot to the terminal building.
Two garages near to the main terminal offer spaces for daily parking. Regular complimentary shuttle bus services connect these garages with the terminal. (For those who prefer to walk, some spaces are accessible by walkway.) Economy Parking

Disabled Persons' Parking

Dulles Intl Airport Washington Ground Transportation
Washington Dulles International Airport is served directly by shuttle van, bus, and taxi. Public transportation is also available for travel both to and from the airport.
Shared ride vans operate between the airport and Washington D.C.'s downtown hotels. Some may make stops at intermediate points along the route. A company known as SuperShuttle operates from stops outside the Main Terminal on the Ground Transportation Level roadway. For disabled persons requiring accessible-van service reservations should be made in advance. Hotels may operate courtesy transportation. Phone links to hotels are available on the Baggage Claim Level. Hotel shuttles generally meet potential guests outside the Baggage Claim Level on the curbside.
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority provides a service that connects downtown Washington D.C. with Dulles Airport via the Dulles Corridor. The Washington Flyer Coach Service operates between Dulles airport and West Falls Church Metrorail Station. Metrorail is the local rapid train transport system. Metrorail provides train connections to the center of Washington D.C. and to many other places within the urban area. Flyer services run from early morning till late in the evening. Dulles airport is located in northern Virginia, some 25 miles (40 km) west of Washington D.C. Linked to the nation's capital by a toll highway, the Dulles Toll Road (267), it is also connected with its area by various other roads. The nearest major alternative to the DTR is the I-66.

Proceed west on I-66 until you reach exit 67. From there follow the signs to the airport, which is about 16 miles (26 km) further on.

The DTR is a 14 mile (22 km) toll highway that stretches from the Capital Beltway west to Dulles airport.
From Baltimore: Head south on I-95 to exit 27 (I 495 West - The Beltway) and exit at 45A. Follow signs to the airport which is approximately 13 miles from the exit 45A.
From Richmond: Proceed north on I-95 to exit 170 (I 495 - The Beltway) to exit 45. Follow the signs to the airport, which is approximately 13 miles from exit 45.
From West Virginia: Drive south on I-81 to I-66 East. I-66 East to exit 53 (Rt. 28 North) and follow Route 28 to airport.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS From central Washington DC, go west on I-66 to exit 67 and follow signs to the airport. From Baltimore, go south on I-95 to exit 27 (I-495 West – ‘the Beltway’) to exit 12B and follow signs to the airport. From Richmond, go north on I-95 to exit 170 (I-495 – ‘The Beltway’) to exit 12B and follow signs to the airport. Hourly parking is located in front of the terminal and there are two daily car parks: Garage 1 and Garage 2, both linked with the terminal. A free shuttle also runs between the garages and the terminal. Four long-term car parks are connected to the terminal by a free shuttle service. CAR HIRE Companies represented at the airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Courtesy telephones can be found in the ground transportation centre on the lower level of the main terminal. Shuttle buses, leaving from outside the terminal building, take passengers to pick up their car.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT Road: Taxi: Washington Flyer Taxicabs exclusively serve Dulles International Airport, offering a 24-hour service. Limousines: Limousine services are also available and passengers must book these in advance. Bus: The Washington Flyer bus runs to West Falls Church Metro Station. Metrorail services can be accessed by taking this bus to West Falls Metro Station. There is a Metrobus express service between downtown Washington DC and the airport, along the Dulles Corridor. Greyhound also provides a service from the airport to several locations in Virginia. Washington Flyer tickets are available at the ground transportation centre ticket counter, on the Arrivals level. The bus departs from outside the Arrivals level, door 4. SuperShuttle provides a door-to-door shared-ride service, also stopping at Union Station, available on demand from outside the terminal building.

CONFERENCE AND BUSINESS FACILITIES Business service centres are located at the east end (tel: 703 572 2963) and west end (tel: 703 572 2969) of the upper level of the main terminal. They provide bureau de change facilities, insurance, fax, photocopying, notary and other services. There are also business service centres in Concourses B, C and D. Conference facilities are not available at the airport. The on-site Washington Dulles Airport Marriott (tel: 703 471 9500) has 14 meeting rooms, including a ballroom accommodating up to 520 delegates, and a fully equipped business centre.
DISABLED FACILITIES Wheelchairs and assistance are available through airline representatives and should be arranged prior to travel. Visual paging and TDDs are available. The airport has disabled toilets and lifts with Braille signs. There are also car parking spaces designated for disabled passengers in the airport car parks which are located either close to the terminal or close to the shuttle bus shelter.
