suggestion was made to Sears, Roebuck & Co. President and Board Chairman
General Robert E. Wood that Sears should start an auto insurance company and
sell insurance by mail. The next year, Allstate was born. Allstate was founded
in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck & Co. and became a publicly traded company
in 1993. When it was established its initial public offering was the largest
in U.S. history. Allstate became a totally independent company on June 30, 1995.
